Western Cape Government

about:

BI4GOV is an initiative of the Western Cape Government, focused on applying Behavioural Insights (BI) within the policy and strategy space. Our aim is to weave the science of Behavioural Insights (BI) into government policy in order to effect meaningful change. When applied to the public policy domain, BI informs the design of policies that are geared toward changing real behaviours and implementing large-scale interventions that are empirically sound.

3 questions:

  • What motivated you to join this partnership?

The partnership offers a unique opportunity to meet mutually beneficial goals in relation to applying BI to complex behavioural challenges and exploring the mechanisms which organisations can utilise to deliver behavioural insights. BI4GOV is well-positioned and eager to contribute to these areas of interest because of the BI experiments which the organisation has run since 2012 in very challenging areas such as education and sustainability.

  • What aspect of the research agenda are you most excited about?

Since BI4GOV is located in the global South, and our problems are by nature, complex, we are particularly excited about theme 2 (applications to complex behaviour challenges). Furthermore, we have been working to embed BI into the work of government in South Africa and change individual behaviour for collective action over the years and are eager to contribute and develop our insights thus far with the work that will take place within theme 3.

  • How do you plan to use the results from the research coming out of the partnership?

BI4GOV hopes to use the partnership’s research results to change organisational behaviour in the Western Cape Government and embed greater efficiencies and scale in our efforts in developing behaviourally informed policy and programmes in a low-resourced context.
