Impact and Innovation Unit
Privy Council Office, Government of Canada
about:
The Impact and Innovation Unit (IIU), housed in the Privy Council Office, Government of Canada, is driving a shift in the way the federal government uses new policy and program tools to help address complex public policy challenges. With a focus on “the how,” the IIU supports departments to build results-driven approaches that work for Canadians. The IIU houses the Centre of Expertise for the Impact Canada Initiative to work with departments in applying behavioural insights, innovative financing approaches, new partnership models, and impact measurement methodologies in priority areas for the Government of Canada.
3 questions:
What motivated you to join this partnership?
The IIU was motivated to join this partnership for two reasons. First, it has a diverse network of partnering organizations spanning universities, government units, the private sector, and others allowing us to benefit from each others’ areas of expertise. Second, we feel this project can have a strong contribution to the field of BI helping support our efforts to leverage BI as a mainstream policy tool to address public policy challenges.
What aspect of the research agenda are you most excited about?
The IIU is excited about the wide range of deliverables that will result from the research agenda, including the BI framework for organizations. We see a real need for this in our work as strive to apply BI in areas where impact can be systematically scaled by ensuring evidence is driving ongoing improvement of interventions.
How do you plan to use the results from the research coming out of the partnership?
Behavioural scientists in the Government of Canada are using BI to increase uptake of social programs, promote environmental sustainability and gender equality, encourage healthy living, and more. With that in mind, we are most excited about applying the behaviour-change framework to advancing Canada’s most complex public policy challenges with the view of improving outcomes for Canadians.
