Consumer Council of Canada

about:

The Consumers Council of Canada works towards an improved marketplace for consumers.

Working together, our members form Canada’s most active, multi-issue consumer group. A non-profit, voluntary organization, the Council works with consumers, business and government towards efficient, equitable, safe and effective markets, in which consumers know their rights and understand their responsibilities and in which strong consumer protection exists when they do not. The Council operates nationally and is one of the few active multi-issue consumer groups that exist today in Canada. It has effectively represented Canadians across the economy. Its members serve in consumer representative roles on advisory committees of federal and provincial government departments and delegated administrative authorities and other regulatory bodies

3 questions:

  • What motivated you to join this partnership?

The Council seeks out opportunities to work with Canadian academic researchers as a way to strengthen its own primary and secondary research efforts to support its consumer representation. It has become concerned that academic research applicable to consumer protection is not reaching policy makers or receiving sufficient exposure within consumer impact assessment to support regulatory development and review. The Council wishes to work with the academic community to be a solution to that problem.

  • What aspect of the research agenda are you most excited about?

The Council is particularly interested in the role behavioural ’nudges’ can play in overcoming public and stakeholder 'free ridership’ related to consumer representation in public processes. It is interested in the maturing of the uses of behavioural sciences in economics to include serving public interest objectives and to assist consumers in meeting their essential needs, protecting the health and safety of themselves and others, and exercising marketplace choices capably.

  • How do you plan to use the results from the research coming out of the partnership?

The Council seeks to learn ways to more capably serve Canada’s consumers and engage effectively with other stakeholders seeking a well-functioning Canadian marketplace and economy.
